Kumparan offers a mix of online editorial and social media generated news. Users can use the platform to contribute content, interact with other users and become popular bloggers with own fan clubs. Topics may range from news items, social fundraising activities, polling surveys, entertainment videos, lifestyle tips and hobbies.

BUSINESS MODEL
Besides producing its own editorial news, Kumparan also aims to facilitate a reliable user-generated content platform through the use of quality assurance editors and moderators. Advertising revenue will be earned to support the website.

Kumparan is primarily a hybrid of online news and entertainment websites, with community noticeboards and the equivalent of a Speakers’ Corner platform for the people of Indonesia. It seeks to preserve press freedom and factual accuracy as much as possible within new regulations to be implemented by the government to reduce the number of fake news and hate speech websites in the region.  

The current editorial team of 100 reporters will be generating content together with the platform users including government officials, activists, artists and musicians who wish to share information with their local social media communities.

    The launch

    January, beta version was launched following trial website in 2016.  Mobile application platforms were also available for both Android and iOS.

    • Co-founded by Indonesia’s popular online news Detikcom veterans Budiono Darsono, Abdul Rahman, Hugo Diba and Calvin Lukmantara. 
    • A hybrid news and social media platform to provide consumer-driven interactive news  to solve information accuracy issues. 

    Fundings

    January, Kumparan secured undisclosed amounts of seed funds from several angel investors in the region from late 2016 onward.

    Early users included 100 public figures, ranging from Information and Technology Minister Rudiantara, singer Aimee Saras, actress Karina Salim, former Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman and politician Hidayat Nur Wahid.

    Focus on expanding market adoption in 2017 and eventually become a media platform for social change.   
    Advertising will be major source of revenue, with a long term plan for IPO as a sustainable funding option.
