Founded by Zhang Yiming in 2012, ByteDance is currently the world’s most valuable startup, worth over $100bn by May 2020. It owns quite a number of popular apps including the news aggregator Jinri Toutiao and short video platforms such as Douyin and its overseas version TikTok.ByteDance is also an active investor in China’s startup ecosystem. With a focus on education and gaming, it also invests in sectors of media, enterprise tech, education, gaming, finance, real estate, artificial intelligence and hardware. Xu Hanhan graduated from the Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, in 2008. She then worked at the VC, China Renaissance Capital Investment, and later became personal assistant to ByteDance CEO and founder Zhang Yiming during the startup's early years. She co-founded Waterdrop in 2016 and is now in charge of Waterdrop Crowdfunding. She also started another of Waterdrop's platforms, Waterdrop Public Wellness, which helps charitable organizations fundraise as well as report on the usage of the funds received.

Founded by the charismatic Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son, SoftBank Group Corp is a multinational conglomerate with assets totaling about $342bn in 2020. SoftBank is best known in Japan for its mobile phone network and distribution business, and it was the sole distributor of the Apple iPhone in Japan until 2011. SoftBank also has subsidiaries in online gaming, publishing, and energy, and owns stakes in Alibaba Group and Sprint.Outside of Japan, SoftBank is known for its venture capital investments. In October 2016, it teamed up with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to lead a $100bn tech fund, named Vision Fund. Its business has expanded to include social networking, e-commerce and sports marketing. In June 2019, Hupu raised RMB1.26 billion in its pre-IPO funding round from ByteDance, TikTok's parent company. Hupu has incubated e-marketplace for trending sports gears Shihuo and sneakers resale platform Poizon. The latter became an independent business as a spin-off from Hupu in 2018. Poizon became a unicorn when its valuation exceeded US$1 billion in April 2019 due to a Series A funding round led by DST Global.
