Investing in hi-tech IT, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology sectors – key pillars of China’s innovation-focused economy since 2017 – the Beijing government-backed Beijing Zhongguancun Longmen Investment manages about RMB 10bn via its first fund of the same name. The firm is founded and led by Xu Jinghong, former Chairman of Tsinghua Holdings, the investment and tech/R&D transfer arm of China’s most prestigious science and research university, whose R&D capacity was ranked in the third place of China’s top 500 enterprises in 2018. The LPs of the fund include social security funds, Beijing’s municipal government and the Haidian District government. Its portfolio enterprises are generally ranked in the top three of their respective industries. Among them, Qi An Xin Technology, which is listed in Shanghai and one of China’s biggest cybersecurity companies; Joy Wing Mao, one of China’s major fruits supply chain companies. In October of 2020, it invested RMB 100m into Beijing Immunochina Pharmaceutical, which develops innovative gene and cell therapies for curing malignant tumors. Longmen also provides mentoring and other expertise and support to its investee startups, especially those that plan to seek public listing.

One of the earliest backers of Chinese internet firms, most famously Tencent and JD.com, Hillhouse Capital is a US$20 billion fund today. Founded in 2005 by Zhang Lei, a Yale School of Management graduate (the initial US$20 million used to start Hillhouse came from the Yale Endowment), the long-term fundamental equity investor is focused on China and Asia, particularly the consumer, TMT, industrials and healthcare sectors. It manages capital for institutional clients, e.g., university endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds and pension funds, and invests across all equity stages.

Launched in 2007, Seedcamp is Europe’s first seed fund and accelerator. Founded by 30 European investors, it focuses on pre-seed and seed stage startups. It has backed nearly 200 companies, producing one unicorn. Media Digital Ventures is the first Spanish Cross-Media fund focusing on Media for Equity. It holds multichannel advertising assets across major media sectors. Based in Barcelona, MDV also creates multimedia and advertising campaigns for scaling high-growth startups in return for equity.MDV is co-founded by Gerard Olivé and Miguel Vicente. Both are serial entrepreneurs, investors and co-founders of Antai Venture Builder, Wallapop, Deliberry and Chicplace. Vicente, who exited LetsBonus which he founded in 2009, is also the president of Barcelona Tech City.

Daniel Romy is the CEO of Investments at Media Digital Ventures, the first media fund dedicated to Media for Equity in Spain. With assets valued at €35 million, MDV supports startups through powerful marketing campaigns in return for equity. Romy is experienced in venture capital and crowdfunding, having worked as COO for three years at The Crowd Angel, a leading equity crowdfunding platform. He is also a member of the investment committee of Inveready First II SCR that manages assets worth €20 million.

Founded in 2011, the knowledge capital fund is an initiative from the InKemia IUCT Group to focus on innovation and the licensing of patents in the biotech sectors. InKemia supports the life science industry through R&D grant programs, technical consultancy and training. It specializes in areas such as chemical synthesis, biotech, bio-catalysis, quality control and EU releases of new products. InKemia also supports local entrepreneurs through the Manuel Arroyo Award for Young Entrepreneurs with the aim to promote local cooperative economic development.

B4Motion is a Spanish venture capital fund led by Sebastian Canadell and supported by a board of advisors who have varied expertise in visual media production, mobile strategy, product design and law. B4Motion is focused on mobility-related technologies, including autonomous driving systems, Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications for transport as well as on-demand logistics, car sharing, parking and valet services. B4Motion invests across all funding stages from seed through Series D and IPO in the Spanish and Latin American markets. 

Headquartered in Madrid with satellite offices in Barcelona, London, Seattle and New York, Alma Mundi is a venture fund that aims to connect Spanish and Latin American entrepreneurs. Alma Mundi’s investments range between €500,000 and €5 million.Alma Mundi offers its investee companies direct access to a global network of investors and industry experts in leading technology ecosystems. Called the Mundi Club, the group comprises over 700 members from 41 cities worldwide. The group’s board members include advisers and executives from Merck, Havas, PepsiCo, Carrefour, Nestlé and HP. 

Hong Kong-based Jeneration Capital was founded in 2015 by Jimmy Chang, a former banker at Morgan Stanley. It now manages approximately US$2bn in capital, utilizing a multi-strategy investment approach with an emphasis on direct investment and dynamic asset allocation across private equity, public equity and diversified fund investments. In terms of direct investment, Jeneration Capital mainly invests in growth-stage technology-enabled companies in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on Greater China. 

Li is a TV presenter, entrepreneur and investor. Born in June 1970, she joined Beijing TV in 1993 as a news anchor. From 1995 to 1999, Li worked at CCTV as a TV show host. In 1999, she left CCTV and co-founded Fleet Entertainment with fellow TV host Dai Jun. The two co-hosted Super Talk Show from 2000 to 2016, one of the most highly viewed shows in China. Li founded cosmetics e-retailer Lefeng.com in 2008, skincare brand JPlus in 2009 and Star Venture Fund in 2015.

Genesia Ventures is a Japanese VC firm founded and led by former CyberAgent Ventures executive Soichi Tajima. The company's name is a portmanteau word combining "genesis" and "Asia" and the fund focuses on seed and pre-Series A rounds. It has backed startups in new media and those implementing new technology to traditional sectors. Its portfolio includes Japanese companies Sukedachi and Linc Corporation as well as Southeast Asian startups Homedy and Bobobox.

Junrun Capital was founded in 2009 in Ningbo, Zhejiang province. It's the largest private equity fund in Ningbo and specializes in M&A, equity and venture capital investments. So far, it has successfully exited seven deals out of a total of 21. Junrun has investment managers and researchers with backgrounds in science and technology. It has offices in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and the US. The company mainly seeks investment opportunities in sustainable materials, cleantech, agriculture, manufacture, biotechnology and the dotcom economy.

Established in 2017 in the UK, Firstminute Capital's investments are founders-driven, rather than by investment sectors. The early-stage venture capital firm has already invested in 32 companies in the US, UK, mainland Europe and Israel. In mid-2018, it raised its first fund of US$100m from 30 unicorns. Recent investments include in the Series A round of tax reclaim company Wevat, in peer-to-peer (P2P) fiat to crypto exchange platform Ramp's pre-seed round and in the seed round of cannabis e-commerce site Miss Grass. 

CAS Star was established in September 2013 in Xi’an by several VC firms and the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The high-tech startup incubator has also set up a RMB 5.2bn Xike Angel fund to specialize in the commercialization of the high-tech research projects. To date, Xike Angel has a portfolio of more than 230 startups with a total value of RMB 20bn. 

Big Sur Ventures is a Spanish VC based in Madrid. It was co-founded by Jose Miguel Herrero and Manuel Matés both with extensive international experience in leading technology products and services companies and M&A. The fund invests in companies focused on SaaS, online marketplace and platforms, IT and digital media. Investments range from seed to later growth stage. The VC usually represents the first institutional capital in a company, leading or co-leading the round with capital injection of between €100,000 and €400.000 per round.
