From 2006–2011, Scholz worked as an engineer and manager at the $640m solar power startup Nanosolar. Silicon Valley's first solar power technology startup financed by American venture capital, the firm was the highest-valued firm in the industry at the time. When Nanosolar closed due to cheaper competition from China, much of its technical expertise and experience were diverted to set up Diamond Foundry.
