Founded in Boston in 2015, Material Impact is a science-based investment fund backing products that make an impact on real-world problems. It currently has 10 companies in its portfolio, from seed to Series C investments. Its most recent investments have been in the $50m 2020 Series C round of SOURCE Global (formerly Zero Mass Water), the premier off-grid drinking water production tech using solar-powered panels, and in the 2020 $12m Series A round of  US electronics protective substance producer actnano.

Founded in 2010, WestSummit Capital is a US-focused, growth-stage venture capital fund with a strong presence in Silicon Valley, Beijing, Hong Kong and Dublin. It has a total of over $400m under management, and invests in the mobile, internet, cloud computing, big data and IoT sectors. In 2013, it participated in a Series C $20m investment in Twitch, the world's leading video platform and community for gamers, which was acquired by Amazon in August 2014 for close to $1bn. 

UBS is a Switzerland-based financial institution providing banking, wealth management, and securities services. Originally established in 1862 as the Bank in Winterthur, it is the largest Swiss banking institution. UBS engages in venture capital activities as part of its investment banking services. In 2020, UBS began a partnership with venture capital firm Anthemis to launch UBS Next, a $200m fund that will invest in fintech and other tech startups.

BayWa Venture GmbH is a subsidiary company of BayWa AG, the German agriculture, energy and construction conglomerate.Putting digitalization at the core of its agriculture strategy, the company is looking to expand its core business into digital services within the existing businesses. It is investigating new digital business models and stand-alone concepts through collaboration with emerging startups focusing on cutting-edge technologies in the agrifood tech space.BayWa started to invest in startups in 2012 mainly focused on online customer management, services and sales platforms. In 2015, the company purchased Farm Facts, a German farm management SaaS and in 2017 invested in Abundant Robotics, a US-based automated harvest company. One of the firms’ most recent investments has been Evja, an Italian startup developing precision farming hardware based on advanced agronomic models and machine learning technology.

Goldman Sachs is one of the biggest investment banking and financial services group in the world. The firm went public in 1999 under the ticker NYSE:GS. To date, Goldman Sachs has raised seven funds, their latest in May 2019 for a total of $4.4bn. Based in New York, the private banking group has made 788 investments with 256 exits. Investments include tech unicorns such as Spotify, Square, Zipline, Xiaomi and the Alibaba Group.Its 2019 annual report showed that Goldman Sachs generated over $36.55 bn in net revenues, with 10% ROE and 10.6% ROTE. As of mid-July 2020, the firm has a market capitalization of $74.33 bn. Goldman Sachs has offices in over 30 countries with major operations in four sectors: investment banking, global markets, asset management and consumer & wealth management.

Silicon Valley-based investor Sapphire Ventures was formerly known as SAP Ventures, the investment arm of the software giant SAP SE, until 2011. It typically invests in mid-stage startups with at least $5–10m in annual revenue across market verticals, geographies and technologies. It typically invests $10–50m (with the flexibility to invest less or up to $100m) as part of its initial investment. With approximately $4bn in assets under active management and more than 50 startups in its portfolio at present, Sapphire has also managed more than 35 exits and 20 IPOs.  Its most recent investments include co-leading the $153m Series D round of workplace skills training platform Degreed in April 2021, and, in March 2021, it invested in two new unicorns. Sapphire contributed to US digital home workout tech Tonal’s $250m Series E round and to the $200m Series D round of Portugal’s Feedzai, the world’s market-leading solution in fighting online fraud.

Samsung Venture Investment, or Samsung Ventures, is the VC investment arm of South Korean diversified conglomerate Samsung Group. It is a separate entity from Samsung NEXT.Samsung Ventures primarily invests in semiconductors, telecommunications tech, software and internet companies, as well as biotechnology and medical companies. The VC is built to support new innovations that can lead to further improvements in Samsung’s existing businesses, which includes smartphones, home appliances, and components like OLED panels and Li-ion batteries.Samsung Ventures has invested in healthcare and wellness tech companies like Indonesia’s telehealth service Alodokter, posture correction device makers Posture360, and Noom, an app for dieting and exercise. In the sensors front, Samsung Ventures has invested in Sense Photonics, a startup creating 3D computer vision based on lidar for industrial and automotive (self-driving) purposes. Besides these companies, Samsung Ventures has also invested in insurtech companies and even gaming companies, such as Pokémon Go developer Niantic.

American investment capital firm Farallon Capital Management was established in 1986. The company manages equity capital for institutions, including college endowments, charitable foundations and pension plans, and funds for high net worth individuals. While most of its investments are in risk arbitrage and debt restructuring, it has also invested in startups across different verticals, such as Indonesian ride-hailing firm Gojek and a host of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology companies.Farallon’s history with Indonesia began long before Gojek came into existence. In 2002, Farallon bought a controlling stake in Bank Central Asia (BCA), an Indonesian bank, during a time when investors avoided Indonesian banks that had been saddled with bad debt. With the controlling stake, Farallon installed a new bank chairman and reformed BCA. Over the next four years Farallon slowly divested in BCA and finally sold the remaining 4% stake in 2006 to earn a profit.

Based in the Netherlands, Prosus is a global investor in consumer tech and Internet companies. It is a subsidiary of South African tech investment company Naspers. In August 2021 the two companies completed a cross-holding agreement in which Naspers owns 57% of Prosus while Prosus owns 49% of Naspers. The two companies share a single board.Prosus is the largest shareholder in Chinese tech giant Tencent and Russian tech platform Mail.ru. Meanwhile, its venture division invests in a variety of fintech, food delivery, and other consumer tech companies. In Indonesia, it has invested in Bibit, a stock and mutual funds investment platform, as well as fishery trading and community development startup Aruna. It has also invested in edtech platforms like Indian executive learning platform Eruditus, and US-based coding education company SoloLearn.

Investing in hi-tech IT, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology sectors – key pillars of China’s innovation-focused economy since 2017 – the Beijing government-backed Beijing Zhongguancun Longmen Investment manages about RMB 10bn via its first fund of the same name. The firm is founded and led by Xu Jinghong, former Chairman of Tsinghua Holdings, the investment and tech/R&D transfer arm of China’s most prestigious science and research university, whose R&D capacity was ranked in the third place of China’s top 500 enterprises in 2018. The LPs of the fund include social security funds, Beijing’s municipal government and the Haidian District government. Its portfolio enterprises are generally ranked in the top three of their respective industries. Among them, Qi An Xin Technology, which is listed in Shanghai and one of China’s biggest cybersecurity companies; Joy Wing Mao, one of China’s major fruits supply chain companies. In October of 2020, it invested RMB 100m into Beijing Immunochina Pharmaceutical, which develops innovative gene and cell therapies for curing malignant tumors. Longmen also provides mentoring and other expertise and support to its investee startups, especially those that plan to seek public listing.

One of the earliest backers of Chinese internet firms, most famously Tencent and JD.com, Hillhouse Capital is a US$20 billion fund today. Founded in 2005 by Zhang Lei, a Yale School of Management graduate (the initial US$20 million used to start Hillhouse came from the Yale Endowment), the long-term fundamental equity investor is focused on China and Asia, particularly the consumer, TMT, industrials and healthcare sectors. It manages capital for institutional clients, e.g., university endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds and pension funds, and invests across all equity stages.

Launched in 2007, Seedcamp is Europe’s first seed fund and accelerator. Founded by 30 European investors, it focuses on pre-seed and seed stage startups. It has backed nearly 200 companies, producing one unicorn. Media Digital Ventures is the first Spanish Cross-Media fund focusing on Media for Equity. It holds multichannel advertising assets across major media sectors. Based in Barcelona, MDV also creates multimedia and advertising campaigns for scaling high-growth startups in return for equity.MDV is co-founded by Gerard Olivé and Miguel Vicente. Both are serial entrepreneurs, investors and co-founders of Antai Venture Builder, Wallapop, Deliberry and Chicplace. Vicente, who exited LetsBonus which he founded in 2009, is also the president of Barcelona Tech City.

Daniel Romy is the CEO of Investments at Media Digital Ventures, the first media fund dedicated to Media for Equity in Spain. With assets valued at €35 million, MDV supports startups through powerful marketing campaigns in return for equity. Romy is experienced in venture capital and crowdfunding, having worked as COO for three years at The Crowd Angel, a leading equity crowdfunding platform. He is also a member of the investment committee of Inveready First II SCR that manages assets worth €20 million.

B4Motion is a Spanish venture capital fund led by Sebastian Canadell and supported by a board of advisors who have varied expertise in visual media production, mobile strategy, product design and law.
