Armed with Asian and European experience, Miguel Amaro co-founded Uniplaces in 2011. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Nottingham, and took a course in Chinese Studies at East China Normal University. He obtained his master’s in Management, with a concentration in Global Entrepreneurship, from Babson Graduate School. Amaro also spent two months as an analyst at Grameen Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh. While developing Uniplaces, he was an entrepreneur-in-residence at Picvic Labs (France), Zhejiang University Innovation Institute (China) and Osram (United States). Ma Yi earned dual bachelor's degrees in Automation and Applied Mathematics from Tsinghua University in 1995. He obtained a master’s and also a doctorate in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 1997 and 2000 respectively.He worked as an assistant professor and later as associated professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2000 to 2011. He was the lead researcher and director of the computer vision team at Microsoft Research from 2009 to 2014. He was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2013 for contributions to computer vision and pattern recognition.

Antonio Lin was admitted as a freshman of College of Mathematics and Informatics in South China Agricultural University in 2015. He also founded a 3D printing company in 2015. The business encountered financial problems and was later shut down.But in March 2016, the global entrepreneur incubator Blackbox picked Lin’s company as one of the ten teams with potential to be trained in Silicon Valley for a week. It was during this training program that Lin met Qiu Chen from Tsinghua University and Zhou Zhiheng, the general manager of Michael Antonio Footwear Group’s business in China.Lin quickly pivoted the focus of his company to 3D printing of footwear and became the CEO of 4D ShoeTech.

He was a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo for one year until 1997.In 1999, Chen was headhunted and joined a US startup to work on developing an artificial heart (LVAD) product Levacor. The startup was later acquired by World Heart Corporation and Chen became its chief engineer. World Heart decided to shut down the program in 2006 because the product was too big to be placed inside a human chest.Chen went back to China in 2007 to found CH Biomedical to build a smaller LVAD device.
