Inspired by community-supported agriculture (CSA), Thousands of Farmers provides an e-commerce platform enabling consumers to subscribe to farm harvests in advance and share their profits. 

DFS168.com is a B2C e-commerce platform for agricultural materials. DFS168.com sells to major agricultural provinces in China such as Jiangxi, Heibei and Anhui. Upon noticing Chinese farmers' lack of agricultural expertise and technical knowledge, the team at DFS168.com came up with the idea of building an agricultural education platform. However, the company decided not to launch the business itself, worried farmers might misinterpret the platform as simply a means to sell more products. Instead, founder Yan Zitong co-founded Tiantian Xuenong, an independent company, with Zhao Guang, and DFS168.com assumed the role of angel investor.

Before founding Thousands of Farmers in 2020, Chen worked at an agritech company developing apps and mini programs for management and marketing.

Founded in Washington DC in 2016, AV Ventures is co-founded by US not-for-profit organizations, the Agricultural Cooperative Development International and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance.AV Ventures focuses on supporting SMEs that facilitate financing for farmers to improve sustainable supply chain management and boost social impact in Africa and Central Asia. Investments in tech startups include the $790,000 seed round of AgroCenta in January 2021. Through AV Frontiers in Bishkek, the VC also recently participated in April’s investment round of Kyrgyzstan-based ololoAkJol Resort, a hub for digital nomads, or independent remote workers.

Based in San Francisco, the Mulago Foundation is a philanthropic foundation designed to carry on the life work of pediatrician Rainer Arnhold who died in 1993 while working in the mountains of Bolivia. He originally set up the Mulago Foundation in 1968, naming it after a hospital in Uganda. His Jewish family, bankers for generations, continued to support the foundation for impact investing across diverse sectors and geographies, with scalable solutions to alleviate poverty.It has invested in 61 companies to date. Successful ventures include: Kenya’s Komaza that raised $28m in its 2020 Series B and Myanmar’s Proximity Finance, a fintech for small-holder farmers that raised $14m in 2020. Komaza helps poor families turn dry land into small-scale, income-generating tree farms, benefiting more than 2m farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Targeting the multibillion-dollar global games market, Alkemis Games wants to make world-class mobile games for mid-core players in Indonesia and abroad.

Based in Frankfurt, GreenTec Capital Partners is a German social impact investor that focuses on supporting African tech and non-tech startups. The VC plans to increase its investment portfolio to a total of 400 enterprises by 2023. Its current stake in 20 startups is estimated to be €32.5m. In 2020, GreenTec joined the pre-seed round of Nigerian online food cooperative Principally and seed round of Freshbag, a farmers’ marketplace in Cameroon. Recent investments also include AgroCenta’s seed funding in January 2021.

Yudha Kartohadiprodjo formerly worked as an editor and publisher at Femina Group, one of Indonesia’s leading magazine and media groups. In 2016, he joined forces with agritech veteran Alihan Tjohjono to establish Karsa, a social platform for farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

Surabaya native, Rian Adam Rajagede, holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). He co-founded IWAK, a crowdfunding platform for freshwater fish farmers. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Computer Science at UGM while working as a lecturer of Algorithm and Data Structure at his alma mater.

Born in a farming family, Yu Yang graduated from the National University of Defense Technology with a master's in computer science. He was the co-founder and CTO of drone startup Linker Networks Inc, before co-founding Farm Friend in 2016 to build a platform connecting farmers and drone operators. He is currently the CEO of Farm Friend.

Agif Arianto has been raising livestock as a hobby since high school. Having learned about the problems that Indonesian farmers face, especially ones caused by dishonest middlemen, he has resolved to alleviate these woes. He founded Angon as a trading platform for users to invest directly in quality livestock which can be subsequently sold for profit.

Not-for-profit social impact investor, Rabo Foundation, is a subsidiary of Rabobank based in the Netherlands. The bank specializes in sustainability-oriented banking, food and agriculture financing.Founded in Utrecht in 1974, Rabo Foundation actively invests in the Netherlands and 22 emerging markets across Africa, Asia and Latin America. It mainly focuses on funding for social enterprises, especially savings and credit cooperatives and producer organizations for smallholder farmers. It currently has investments in 26 startups including participation in AgroCenta’s $790,000 seed round in January 2021. Rabo has also pumped in $500,000 in Dutch fintech Geldfit.nl, a debt prevention and counseling app service.

Gadjah Mada University (UGM) graduate, Ade Armyatna Yusfantri, holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He is currently the co-founder and web developer of IWAK, a crowdfunding platform for freshwater fish farmers. Previous to IWAK, Ade had also co-founded Meseji together with Rushan. The Web-based application helps SMEs to automate their text message (SMS) marketing efforts.
